The United States was all but officially awarded the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday when FIFA President Gianni Infantino told European soccer officials there was one valid bid for the event.
Infantino also said there was one valid bid for the 2035 Women’s World Cup, which is from the United Kingdom, while speaking at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade. The first formal bid documents must be signed by the end of April.
While not official, the U.S. 2031 bid could include Mexico and potentially other members from the CONCACAF region joining. The U.S. and Mexico bid has been favored to win 2031 Women’s World Cup hosting rights since last year, when the two federations pulled out of bidding for the 2027 edition.
“We are excited about the opportunity to co-host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and, in collaboration with our Concacaf partners, are committed to delivering a tournament that leaves a lasting legacy – one that elevates women’s soccer across the world and inspires future generations of players and fans,” US Soccer said in a statement. “As FIFA finalizes the number of participating teams in the tournament, we will solidify our partnership structure with fellow Concacaf nations. We look forward to sharing more details and unveiling our full vision for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup in the near future.”
The U.S. hosted the Women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2003. Mexico has never hosted the Women’s World Cup. The two countries along with Canada will co-host the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. While not official, the U.S. 2031 bid could include Mexico and potentially other members from the CONCACAF region joining the project.
“So the path is there for the Women’s World Cup to be taking place in ’31 and ’35 in some great countries,” Infantino said, “to boost even more the women’s football movement.”
England hosted the Women’s European Championship in 2022 and, in a joint bid with Ireland, Scotland and Wales, will stage the men’s Euros in 2028. The U.K.’s interest was supported last month by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer when FIFA said it was formally seeking bids from member federations.
“We are honored to be the sole bidder for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035,” English FA Chief Executive Officer Mark Bullingham said. “Hosting the first FIFA World Cup since 1966 with our home nations partners will be very special. The hard work starts now, to put together the best possible bid by the end of the year.”
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be played in Brazil, which beat a European co-hosting bid from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Infantino also detailed FIFA’s plan to have more women’s teams than men’s playing at the 2028 Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles, saying FIFA’s proposal to the International Olympic Committee is to flip the numbers to have 16 women’s teams and 12 in the men’s tournaments. The final decision is for the IOC, which has an executive board meeting next Wednesday.
